Sawmill Manager

Bingaman & Son Lumber, Inc., a growing wood products manufacturer has an opportunity at their St. Marys Lumber sawmill (new mill built 2018) located at 153 Aviation Way St Marys PA:

Direct and manage all sawmill operations, with overall responsibility for operational and financial performance.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage cut schedule (species, thickness, sorts).
  • Monitor, analyze and utilize data provided via daily recons to maximize sawmill efficiency.
  • Determine operating strategies that maximize returns.
  • Set/monitor the facilities daily/weekly production goals.
  • Provide backup to machine operators as needed.
  • Price/sell all sawmill products.
  • Build/maintain customer relationship for all sawmill product lines.
  • Routinely monitor markets for pricing/spec changes.
  • Manage log yard & lumber inventories to avoid stain/spoilage.
  • Coordinate with Procurement regarding log quality/inventory levels.
  • Periodically monitor consistency/accuracy of incoming log scale.
  • Provide general oversite of Maintenance Department (PM/downtime).
  • Provide leadership that promotes a culture of safety.
  • Oversee employee adherence/participation in safety program.
  • Work with maintenance to implement safety recommendations.
  • Work with Accounting to develop/monitor production budget.
  • Maintain proper staffing levels.
  • Schedule/plan OT and time off for sawmill employees.
  • Oversee sawmill employee relations/management via corporate handbook.
  • Complete/review periodic performance reviews for sawmill staff.
  • Develop/implement cross training schedule.
  • Identify/work with HR to implement employee development programs.
  • Forster positive morale.
  • Design/Cost (+ROI)/Sponsor/Manage facility improvement projects.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 10-15 years in sawmill supervisory and production experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of sawmill business including equipment, process and products.
  • NHLA Grading Certification with Post-Secondary Wood Products education preferred.
  • Display excellent leadership, time management, organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • High degree of personal integrity, strong work ethic and a self-starter.
  • Efficient while working with computers.
  • Valid PA Driver license.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions and lift/move 50+ lbs.

Senior Procurement Forester

Bingaman & Son Lumber, Inc., a growing wood products manufacturer has an opportunity at their St. Marys Lumber sawmill (new mill built 2018) located at 153 Aviation Way St Marys PA:

Responsible for sourcing, purchase and management of hardwood timber and log contracts required to maintain desired inventories.

Responsibilities:

  • Motivate, manage, lead & support Procurement staff.
  • Collaborate with management and staff to develop overall procurement strategy/goals for the location.
  • Actively participate in the procurement of high-quality hardwood logs and timber to support inventory requirements.
  • Manage logging operations and logistics to ensure timely, well executed timber/log harvests.
  • Monitor, analyze and utilize data derived from BING/GP to ensure timely, accurate log/timber pricing.
  • Monitor industry/market for trends and changes.
  • Coordinate with Sawmill Manager regarding log quality/inventory levels.
  • Work with Accounting to develop procurement budget and monitor financial results.
  • Provide leader that promotes and culture of safety and best practices.
  • Work with HR to design/implement employee development programs.
  • Monitor department compliance with forestry related regulations and certification programs.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry and 10 years of procurement experience.
  • Solid understanding of PA Hardwood Timber resources/markets.
  • General knowledge of logging/hauling practices (BMP’s).
  • Basic knowledge of sawmill operation.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, math and, communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic, self-starter and, high degree of personal integrity.
  • Efficient while working with computers.
  • Valid PA Driver license.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions and lift/move 50+ lbs.

Resale Yard Assistant / Forestry Technician

Bingaman & Son Lumber, Inc., a growing wood products manufacturer has an opportunity at their Pine Creek Lumber sawmill located at 60 Lizardville Road, Mill Hall PA:

Assist with daily operation of resale log yard, and provide assistance to Log Scaler and Procurement Team, as needed.  This is a great opportunity for someone entering the Forestry field with potential for future growth.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Prepare logs for resale (clip, saver, etc.)
  • Work with buyers during log purchases.
  • Compile and reconcile completed log sale data using handheld data collector.
  • Provide backup to log scaler for maintenance of incoming log inventory.
  • Sort and pile logs in resale and production log storage areas.
  • Load containers and trucks.
  • Ability to run/maintain chainsaw.
  • Seasonally, as needed:
    • Cruise timber and gather data for procurement staff.
    • Grade, scale and purchase logs from offsite vendors.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of Associate’s Degree in Forestry.
  • Proficient in species identification (tree, log & lumber).
  • Working knowledge of log grading rules for footage and quality.
  • Excellent time management, organization, math and communication skills.
  • High degree or personal integrity, safety oriented, a strong work ethic and a self-starter.
  • Efficient when using computers including inventory management and mapping.
  • Able to operate log truck/log loader.
  • Valid PA Driver license.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions and able to lift/move 50+ lbs.
